We wanted something that could stand up to the lake effect weather off Lake Erie. It was good to know that this product is moisture resistant.
Erie, Pa., Homeowner Is in Love With His Updated Home and Is Confident of the New Siding’s Moisture Resistance
Dan Stevenson lives in a one-story ranch home in Fairview, just outside of Erie, Pa. Built in the 1980s, Dan’s home had yellow aluminum siding with brown brick accents from the home’s original construction. He had repainted it once and decided that it was time to replace it.
“It just looked old and aged,” Stevenson said.
His family recently experienced a generational shift with his daughter moving out and his mom moving in, so his home improvement is now focused on upgrading the landscaping and exterior for anticipated time spent outside. Dan works for a building products distributor, so he knows his siding. He jumped at the chance to test the product on his home.
In addition to the aesthetic benefits of replacing the home’s siding, Stevenson especially liked that Ply Gem ELEMENTS is moisture resistant.
“With the snow we get four to five months of the year, plus being near Lake Erie, we wanted something that could stand up to that,” he said. “It was good to know that this product is moisture resistant. Once the snow starts melting and the rain comes and blows sideways because of the wind off the lake, we wanted to make sure we wouldn’t have a problem.”
What is Ply Gem ELEMENTS?
Ply Gem ELEMENTS composite siding is the first, truly innovative, patent-pending exterior cladding material that will change the way contractors and homeowners think about siding. Using natural materials, including sand, it is a water-resistant, lightweight and flexible composite siding that is beautiful and built to withstand whatever Mother Nature, and everyday life, throws at it.
Ply Gem ELEMENTS is a revolutionary composite siding that gives you the authentic look of real wood but without the headaches of other hardboard siding like fiber cement and engineered wood. Those materials can absorb water, causing them to swell and rot. If not treated immediately, moisture can build up and lead to long-term costly damage that can destroy the integrity and structure of your home.
Ply Gem ELEMENTS is made from a patent-pending formulation that protects your home by keeping moisture out — no rot, swelling, cracks, peels, dents or chips. It’s available in traditional and on-trend colors, in two finishes, and is backed by a 50-year limited warranty and 15 years on pre-painted finish.
Beautiful, Lake-Inspired Color Scheme
Jim Stoll, owner of James Stoll Builders in McKean, Pa., does interior and exterior remodeling with about half a dozen siding replacement projects on his schedule during a typical year.
Stoll’s crew of four removed the old siding, installed wood panel sheathing and housewrap, and installed the new siding over the course of four weeks in December with temperatures in the teens.
Both Stoll and Stevenson pointed to the eye-catching blue-gray with white trim color combination that makes the house pop.
“The house looks fantastic,” Stoll said. “I was over there a week ago to show it to someone, and it just looks stellar. We used nice, white, crisp corners, soffit and fascia with contrasting dark blue-gray siding, and the contrasting colors make it look really nice.”
Stevenson said they selected the color because it was a newer siding color. He held up samples against the side of the house at different times of day, so his wife could see it under different light.
“It looks like a totally different house,” he said. “We get compliments every day from somebody new. We could not be happier.”
